Why life insurance is the ultimate Valentine’s Day gift

Girlfriend rides piggyback on her boyfriend who's wearing heart-shaped glasses

Indulge us, dear readers, as today we would like to correct a grave injustice. Here’s the situation. It was during our daily lunch break, which typically entails eating a delicious turkey sandwich al desko (it’s like al fresco, but … well, you get it). On this particular day, as we chowed down on such sweet sustenance and scrolled through the day’s most important headlines, we happened to come across one of those “Best ways to say I love you” clickbait-style articles. Being the romantics that we are, we couldn’t help but read it. And being the romantics that we are, we were shocked — shocked — by what we read.

Or rather, what we didn’t read.

You see, the authors of this list (who shall remain anonymous) had failed to include life insurance amongst their finest ways to say those three magic words. (And yet, improbably, hiring a string quartet to serenade your beloved at work made the cut. Pfft, as if.) So allow us to clear things up: Life insurance isn’t just a great Valentine’s Day gift, it’s the great Valentine’s Day gift — and the definitive way to say “I love you,” 365 days a year.

Don’t believe us? Allow us to make the case.

1. It shows you’re ready for a commitment.

There’s a key word in the phrase “life insurance.” It’s “insurance.” But don’t overlook the “life” part, either. When you get a life insurance policy for yourself, you really are making a decades-long commitment to the well-being of your spouse or partner. It demonstrates that you want to be Mr. or Ms. Right, not just Mr. or Ms. Right Now. And really, what’s more romantic than that?

2. No expedited shipping required.

It’s 2019, which means you can apply for life insurance online. In fact, it’s almost as simple as, say, ordering flowers online. (Arguably more so, depending on how picky you are with vases.) And unlike more tangible gifts, you won’t have to deal with the hassles of shipping or tracking a package. In fact, in this day and age, some of the pain points of applying for insurance — like a medical exam — may not always be necessary, depending upon the applicant’s insurability, based on their truthful answers to health questions in the application. Issuing the policy or paying benefits depends upon this.

3. It definitely fits. And won’t die in a week.

You can’t say that for a cashmere sweater or a bouquet of flowers. In fact, life insurance is that rare gift that almost everybody needs — no matter your age, your marital status, if you get life insurance through work, or whether you have (or don’t have) kids.

4. Like diamonds, quality is key.

Diamonds are forever, but there’s a difference between the rocks used for industrial drills and the ones on engagement rings. Same goes for life insurance. A life insurance policy — whether it’s a 20-year policy, a 30-year policy, or even a million-dollar policy — is only as good as the company that backs it. You want a policy issued by a respected insurance company that is well-rated by leading independent rating agencies (like A.M. Best) so that you’re taking an important step in protecting those you love. (We know, again with the “l” word. We’re lovers, what can we say.)

5. If you play your cards right, it might even lead to beneficiaries.

Look, if someone gave us a life insurance policy for Valentine’s (hint, hint), let’s just say we would be very generous with rewarding that certain someone, if you know what we mean. (We mean we might get them a life insurance policy to say thank you.)

But yeah, romance will be in the air, and one thing could lead to another, and … well, the next thing you know, you’ll be wondering how to name a child as a beneficiary for your policy.

And we know, we know. You’re thinking it’s not the kind of present that makes for a great presentation, a memorable “wow moment” they’ll be talking about for years to come. Well, you’d be wrong — just check out these printer-ready Valentine’s Day Coverage-grams we made. Consider it our Valentine’s Day gift to you.

Life insurance that's actually simple.
